(CLEVELAND) – Indians closer Chris Perez will be completely shut down for the next 5-7 days according to the team.
Results from Perez’s Sunday afternoon MRI showed mild tendinitis in his right rotator cuff.
The two-time All-Star closer was put on the 15-day disabled list before Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. Left-hander Nick Hagadone filled the Indians open roster spot. Set-up man Vinnie Pestano will assume the Tribe’s closer role in Perez’s absence according to manager Terry Francona.
Perez has been dealing with right shoulder issues dating back to spring training. The recent flare up happened on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park in Boston when the Red Sox battled back to score four runs in the ninth inning to shock the Indians 6-5.
The Indians lost again on Memorial Day at Great American Ball Park. The Tribe has now dropped four-straight games, including six of their last seven. The last three games handed over to the bullpen have resulted in losses.
The Tribe gets back to action Tuesday night in Cincinnati at 7:10 pm ET.
