Indians acquire Jason Kubel

(CLEVELAND) – The Indians completed a trade on Friday acquiring outfielder Jason Kubel from the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash and a minor league player to be named later.

According to multiple reports the Tribe did not claim Kubel on waivers and the Dbacks will pay nearly all of the $2.5 million remaining on the slugger’s contract.

Kubel, 31, is only hitting .220 with 5 HRs in 89 games this season with Arizona but he is a career .265 hitter with 139 HRs. In 2012 he hit 30 HRs and had 90 RBIs. Kubel has spent nine seasons in the majors with two teams, the Dbacks and the Minnesota Twins.

The Indians begin a three-game series in Detroit with the Tigers following a three-game sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves. Kubel could help the Tribe’s offense who went 0-for-18 with runners in scoring position and were outscored 8-3 in the series.

Cleveland is currently four-games back of the Oakland Athletics in the AL Wildcard hunt and 6 ½ games behind the Tigers in the AL-Central Division.
