VIDEO: Parma woman one of three Turnpike crash victims

(Milan, OH) The State Highway Patrol says a woman from Parma is one of three people who died in a series of crashes involving at least 50 vehicles on the Ohio Turnpike.

20-year-old Hannah Matheny of Parma, a passenger in a Ford Focus, was killed in the first crash zone, which involved about 16 vehicles. Also killed in that same crash was 42-year-old Grzegorz A. Piwowarczyk of Palatine, Illinois, who was driving a commercial vehicle.

The second crash zone, involving approximately 20 vehicles, resulted in the death of 66-year-old Janice M. Robb of Schererville, Indiana. She was a passenger in a Chevy Venture.

The Patrol also says a trooper responding to one of the first accidents Wednesday was seriously injured when he was pinned between two vehicles. Tpr. Andrew Clouser, who is 29, is in the intensive care unit of St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where he was taken from Firelands Hospital in Sandusky.

Pileups stretched across a two-mile section in the eastbound lanes midway between Toledo and Cleveland.

At least two lanes of the eastbound Turnpike were open by late Thursday morning.

The Patrol received a call about the first crash at 1:25 p.m. and dispatched a trooper to the scene. The trooper alerted dispatchers that he had been struck and pinned between two vehicles at 2:05 p.m. This crash started a chain reaction of crashes with two severe crash zones, one near the initial crash, near milepost 102 and one at the rear, near milepost 101. Approximately 50 vehicles were trapped between these two crash zones with minor or no damage to the vehicles.
